A criminalist objectively examines physical evidence using investigative skills and practical experience. They attempt to separate important evidence from trivial evidence. Interpreting the evidence is the primary skill of the criminalist, helping to identify the circumstances at the time the crime was committed and can reinforce a witness' statement. Criminalists supply written reports and may be asked to offer an expert testimony in court. They work in state and regional agencies, forensic labs in police departments, medical examiners' offices, attorney's offices, colleges and universities, federal agencies, private companies, state and regional agencies, and sheriff's offices.
