A court reporter transcribes the events that take place during a court session. Reporters must be able to work quickly, so nothing said is missed, and are commonly able to record up to 200 words per minute. The record taken during court proceedings is used by lawyers attempting to appeal their case, and base their arguments on the exact statements made during trial. The appeals court justices use the transcripts to write their opinions. For this reason, it is critically important that the court reporter is extremely accurate, in order to maintain an effective judicial system. Court reporters are sometimes asked to record interrogations, depositions and other aspects of pretrial proceedings.
